Billy Joel: Thursday December 4, 2008

Fans of the piano man prepare yourselves! The Frontier Touring Company welcomes back Billy Joel to Australia and New Zealand this November and December for a limited run of concerts. Billy will take to the stage in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney and - for the first time in 10 years will also play shows in Auckland and Adelaide.

Billy Joel is one of this century’s greatest musicians. Winning six Grammy Awards, selling in excess of 150 million albums worldwide, being inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and also the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame are just a few of the accolades Billy has clocked up over the years. Indeed it is thirty years since the release of Billy’s landmark album ‘The Stranger’. To celebrate this anniversary, Sony BMG are issuing ‘The Stranger 30th Anniversary Legacy’ edition with a bonus disc of live tracks. This collectors item is being released to coincide with the announcement of Billy’s tour through Sony BMG on Saturday July 12th.

Most recently Billy has been awarded the prestigious honour of giving the final ever musical performance at the renowned Shea Stadium. A sporting venue by trade – the home of the New York Mets major baseball league team – it has also had an illustrious music career that has seen performances from everyone such The Beatles and Led Zeppelin to name but a few. It’s a fitting end to have the incomparable Billy Joel, a native New Yorker, close the final curtain on this hallowed ground.

In 2006 Billy toured Australia thrilling the audiences and critics alike by playing all the favourites – Piano Man, Uptown Girl, New York State of Mind, River of Dreams and Tell Her About It amongst many others – in a two and a half hour spectacular. Breaking attendance records across Australia, Billy left everyone enraptured with his performances.

The Herald Sun announced: “…his performance showed why he remains one of the premier acts of the world”. The Courier Mail were similarly thrilled: “There were no huge screens, no pyrotechnics, no gimmicks at all – unless you count a revolving piano – because Joel didn’t need them. The focus was all on the piano man – just as it should be.”

“Billy Joel performed with expertise and intensity all night long.” announced The Age, and the Sydney Morning Herald concurred: “…he is a well-seasoned entertainer, with a gift for writing songs that push all the crowd-pleasing buttons.”

Tickets to see Billy Joel were snapped up in record time, and with Auckland and Adelaide added to the agenda, you can expect demand to be unprecedented. Secure yours when they go on sale this Friday 25 July.

Jose Carerras: Friday February 6, 2009

Announced as a major coup for music lovers, Queenslanders will have the rare opportunity to hear what critics around the globe have hailed as ‘the voice of the century’ - José Carreras in Concert with The Queensland Orchestra for one night only, Friday, February 6, 2009.

This astonishing orchestral pairing was announced today at the launch of The Queensland Orchestra (TQO) Season 2009 by The Hon. Rod Welford MP, Minister for Education & Training and Minister for the Arts.

Managing Director, Michael P. Smith said the names of José Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti were forever etched in the global vernacular since the famous Three Tenors concert opened the curtains on the 1990 World Cup Finals on a summer evening in Rome.

“Together, these three extraordinary performers popularised the operatic voice overnight and what an honour it will be to welcome José Carreras to Queensland in February,” Mr Smith said.

“José Carreras is one of the elite tenors of the last hundred years. To see him perform with The Queensland Orchestra will be akin to sharing in a piece of music history,” he said.

Born in December 1946, in Barcelona, Spain, José Carreras was always destined to sing. Passengers aboard boats travelling from Spain to Argentina and the customers of his mother's hair salon would listen to him and legend has it he would lock the bathroom door so he could sing uninterrupted.

At age eight he first performed on radio. At 11, he starred in his first role with the Barcelona Opera. It was the beginning of a spectacular career and at 18, the soprano voice of the young Carreras changed into the tenor voice that has made him ‘the voice of the century’.

Particularly eminent in the operas of Verdi and Puccini, his career has encompassed over 60 roles on stage and in the recording studio.
His showcase albums include Andrea Chenier, La bohème, Tosca, Werther, Don Carlo, Carmen, La forza del destino, I pagliacci, L’elisir d’amore and Un ballo in maschera.

He gained fame with a wider audience as one of The Three Tenors with a concert program which began in 1990 and continued until 2003.

Carreras is also known for his humanitarian work as the president of the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation (La Fundació Internacional Josep Carreras per a la Lluita contra la Leucèmia), which he established following his own recovery from the disease in 1988.
The Queensland Orchestra is focused on attaining new heights in 2009, following a momentous year in 2008. The upcoming season is one of celebrations, milestones and new experiences for all lovers of music, no matter what age or music tastes.

Alicia Keys: Wednesday December 10, 2008

The Frontier Touring Company and Roundhouse Entertainment are thrilled to confirm the return of R&B superstar Alicia Keys to Australian and New Zealand shores this December. Alicia will return for her biggest shows to date Down Under, and will also perform a series of winery shows. Special guests on this tour will be Jordin Sparks and Lowrider (AUS only).

With 30 millions album sales, 11 Grammy Awards, 4 US #1 albums, a name-check from Bob Dylan, and most recently being awarded the prestigious honour of recording the Bond theme with Jack White, Alicia Keys has set herself apart from her contemporaries. Selling almost 20 million singles, Alicia has created instant classics with the likes of ‘Fallin’, ‘A Woman’s Worth’, ‘Karma’ and ‘Superwoman’, and has become one of the brightest stars of this decade.

The release of her fourth album As I Am received a rapturous response from fans, as they sent it sailing to a #1 debut on the US Billboard chart, achieving the highest first week sales of any female R&B artist in history. ‘No One’ received two Grammy Awards, as the single peaked at #2 in both Australia and New Zealand. The media have been just as taken with what is, arguably, Alicia’s finest work to date.

Spin announced that: “On her melodically powerful third studio album, she matures into the matriarch of her genre,” and Billboard mirrored their sentiments: “The strong stories that Keys spins are complemented by deft musical arrangements that integrate more rock and pop into her enriched old-school vibe.”

Blender were awestruck, offering: “The music is dizzying, even mesmerizing.” The New York Times pronounced that “As I Am radiates not just confidence but also experience. On the whole it’s her strongest effort yet.” And People Magazine declared that Alicia continued to “scale artistic heights on As I Am" ranking the album their #1 for the year.

Those witnessing the live shows have been similarly wowed. The Independent enthused that “Keys proves she's still in a league of her own,” while the Manchester Evening News gushed “Despite lyrics bursting with attitude and huge critical acclaim the performing arts school valedictorian remarkably remains more dignified than diva. And it is that, teamed with her ability to both silence and excite her audience through her performance at the piano that secures Keys' place among modern R&B royalty.”

Alicia’s special guest at all shows will be the esteemed Jordin Sparks. Winner of American Idol in 2007, it took Jordin little time to establish herself as one of the stars of 2008. Capturing a worldwide audience following the release of her debut album Jordin Sparks and single ‘Tattoo’, it wasn’t until Jordin handed the reins to her fans, that things really took off. Allowing them the privilege of choosing her second single, they settled on ‘No Air’ which saw Jordin hit #1 around the world – including Australia and New Zealand. Playing her first live shows in Australia and New Zealand as part of this tour, there’s no doubt that those before her will be left in awe.

Hip-hop funk enthusiasts Lowrider will open all Australian shows for Alicia on this tour. Lowrider drew major attention upon securing the opening slot for Christina Aguilera’s Australian 2007 tour. 2008 saw more milestones achieved as they toured nationally with the Big Day Out and released their sophomore record Diamond Amongst The Thieves (out now through Illusive). Boasting radio favourites ‘Be Bad’ and ‘Friend’, Diamond Amongst The Thieves introduced Lowrider to a new audience, and drew rave reviews. Inpress described the album best, writing: “The foursome are not bound by where their sound goes or what path their sound follows. Instead they appear to have free rein to let their sound, style and range develop.”

On her last Australian and New Zealand tour in 2004, Alicia Keys sold out every show. There’s no doubt tickets to see Alicia live this December will sell fast. Secure yours when they go on sale this Friday 22 Acts performing are:

Neil Young 2009: Wednesday January 21, 2009

Legendary guitarist. Anti-war protestor. Hall of famer. Environmental crusader. Instantly recognisable vocalist. Father. Social activist. Filmmaker. Godfather of grunge. Oscar-nominated songwriter. Heart of Gold. The Last Waltz. Crazy Horse. Let’s Impeach the President. Rockin’ in the Free World. Crosby, Stills, Nash and …….

We could go on, but why not hand it over to the man himself? Five years since he last ventured Down Under, rock icon NEIL YOUNG returns this January for three very special shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

At 62, YOUNG is enjoying a prolific and charmed phase of his 40-year-plus career, with the albums Greendale (2003), Prairie Wind (2005) and Living with War (2006) amongst his most powerful and well received. Last year came Chrome Dreams II: “Some listeners have said that this album is positive and spiritual,” YOUNG says. “I like to think it focuses on the human condition.” In between has flowed a series of archival releases, including the album Live at Massey Hall 1971.

YOUNG’s current touring band features pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith, bassist Rick Rosas, drummer Chad Cromwell, guitarist Anthony Crawford and singer/guitarist (and wife) Pegi Young.

On recent European dates, his setlist has been eclectic, featuring newer material, rarities, and hits. As The Guardian put it after London show in March: “As befits rock’s most unpredictable elder statesman, you never know quite what a NEIL YOUNG concert will entail…. Tonight is something of a smorgasbord. Whatever the style, his sets have been “heavy on the classics”, from Powderfinger to Cowgirl in the sand.

“Hey, Hey, My My is pitched at a remarkable level of ferocity. More remarkable still, YOUNG maintains this ferocity for the remainder of the set…. Even the most impartial observer could see why Young continues to inspire such devotion.” (The Gaudian, March 2008)

YOUNG is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and two-time inductee into of America’s Rock and Roll hall of Fame (firstly as a solo artist, then as a member of Buffalo Springfield). He is revered by peers and protégés alike, and has worked with artists from Emmylou Harris to Pearl Jam. Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Flea wrote in Rolling Stone in 2004 the “Neil is the guy I look at when I think about getting older in a rock band and still having dignity and relevance and honesty. He’s never, ever sold out, and he’s never pretended to be anything other than what he is.”

NEIL YOUNG is, simply, the real deal. One of the rare modern musicians for whom the term “legend” is more under than over-statement. His shows this summer in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne offer a rare chance to witness the legend perform in his purest form.

And a message for fans everywhere in Australia and New Zealand: Stay tuned for a special announcement. Acts performing are:
